It seems like every time I'm out there's someone whose mirror is 4 inches off of me. That aggravates me. How do drivers treat you as a cyclist on the road?
Mostly I ride at home, in Thomasville, North Carolina. But in years past, I've had a bike on the motor home, and I'd sneak out from the racetrack Richmond and Watkins Glen are my favorites. Some people would say, if I was going out 40 miles on a Saturday [with a race on Sunday], "You're wearing yourself out." Uh, not really, but thanks for your concern. You watch the guys doing a time trial in the Tour and they're on their trainers for 40 minutes with sweat pouring off just warming up.
I'm kind of geeky when it comes to monitoring things. It's part of racing. Like, today, we were at Indianapolis doing Goodyear tire tests [to determine ideal compounds for that track], and got up to about 205 mph. And I've got SRM power meters on all three of my bikes, so when I get back from a ride, I take my SRM inside and download it on my computer. I print it out and keep a book on it know, today I burned X amount of calories and I was at this power all the way through; this segment, I was better today than three weeks ago. The thing is, I go, "Wow, I was faster" or "dang it, I was slower." But I don't really get into how come.
When you're driving, your heart rate can get high averages about 125 for four hours, and can get up to 160. You need strength with some cardio. Times when I've been riding a lot, it's really helped. Then when it's time to recuperate, when I've been riding a lot, I have no problem getting up at 6 a. m. and going for a ride. If I haven't been riding, I get up at, oh, noon.

My brothers in law, Rusty and Rodney Slate, talked me into it years ago. I remember leaving my neighborhood were doing a 15 mile route I thought, I'll never make it.
